courage classic bicycle tour 2015!

I have a big announcement to make! As you might have already guessed from the banner, it's about my participation in the 2015 Courage Classic Bicycle Tour! This year marks my first-ever ride in the bicycle tour benefiting the Child Abuse Intervention Dept. at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital of Tacoma, WA!

The Alaska Airlines Courage Classic Bicycle Tour was created as a fundraising ride to support the Rotary Endowment for the Intervention and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. This endowment will ensure that the children in our communities and their families will never be turned away from the help they might need in the case of sexual or physical abuse.

It's sad but true that one of every three girls and one of every five boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18. Since 1988, the number of children treated for sexual abuse at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital has increased nearly 250 percent. The impact of sexual and physical abuse can be long lasting without early intervention and treatment.

I only realized it today just how close this cause was to me. I've had a lot to meditate on while in the saddle; what keeps me motivated to keep pushing through. My thoughts drew to memories of my youth and the physical and emotional abuse my sister and I endured, which was "normal" from our cultural standpoint. I don't agree with how we were disciplined, but I've come to accept what has happened to us as it was out of love for us that my parents did what they did.

Love didn't make going through it any easier and lucky for me I'm now through that part of my life.

I am excited to rally for this cause because it combines something that I already truly enjoy doing (riding) with a great cause that through my own life experience can identify with.

It would mean a great deal if you could sponsor me. Please head over to My Fundraising Page! Even if only to learn more about what the Courage Classic Bicycle Tour is all about.

Here's to pedaling for the kids!
